10th Arrondissement

The 10th is dominated by the Boulevard de Magenta and the Rue La Fayette, which intersect between Gare du Nord and Gare de l’Est. At the southern end is the Place de la République. The district also includes much of the Canal Saint-Martin. Recent estimates suggest the immigrant population to be about 25 percent of the district’s total (about 20 percent outside of the EU and 5 percent from EU states).

La Goutte d’Or

Palumbo (2014) describes Barbès-La Goutte d’Or as “definitely, for better or worse, an exceptional place” (3186, emphasis in the original). The neighborhood has been an immigrant neighborhood for a long time, “a worldwide crossroads since the end of the 19th century” (3186). Like the other neighborhoods I studied, La Goutte d’Or manifests an openness to new immigrant cultures. It is itself a little mosaic: the area near the Barbès-Rochechouart metro stop is largely North African and the area near the Château Rouge metro stop is largely West African. There is a practical cosmopolitanism here.

The mixing of people from different places of origin shapes the public and semi-public places of the neighborhood. It also influences the way Parisians think about the place. The people and the practices form the basis for residents’ sense of place and for visitors’ ascription of the place as a distinct type of immigrant neighborhood.

From the way of dressing, to the odors coming out of restaurants, and the rhythms of music played in shops, on the streets of Barbès there is a high mutual visibility of people belonging to different cultural worlds that together contribute to a different atmosphere.
